Final Grade Formula
Your course grade after the final is a weighted mix of your current grade and your final exam score:
Solving for the final exam score gives the formula this calculator uses:
Here w is the final exam weight as a decimal (25% = 0.25).
Worked Example
You have an 84%, the final is worth 25%, and you want a 90% in the class:
- Current × (1 − w) = 84 × 0.75 = 63
- Goal − 63 = 90 − 63 = 27
- 27 ÷ 0.25 = 108% — not possible without extra credit.
Aiming for an 85% (B) instead: (85 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 88% on the final.
How Final Exam Weight Changes Everything
| Current grade | Final weight | Goal | Final needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 84% | 10% | 85% | 94% |
| 84% | 20% | 85% | 89% |
| 84% | 30% | 85% | 87.3% |
| 84% | 50% | 85% | 86% |
The heavier the final, the closer the score you need gets to your goal. Teachers can share this calculator with students before exam week, and use the weighted grade calculator to compute the current grade from categories.
Frequently Asked Questions
What score do I need on my final?
Use the formula Final needed = (Goal − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final exam weight as a decimal. Enter your numbers above and the calculator does it instantly.
What if the score needed is over 100%?
It means the goal grade can’t be reached with the final alone. Ask your teacher about extra credit, or check the targets table for the highest grade you can still reach.
What does “Already secured” mean?
Your current grade is high enough that you’ll reach that target even with a 0 on the final.
Where do I find the final exam weight?
It is usually listed in the course syllabus or grading policy, for example “Final exam: 20%”. Ask your teacher if you are not sure.
Does it work with points-based grading?
Yes. Convert your current points to a percentage, and use the final’s share of total course points as its weight.
Is the calculator free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.
