How to Use the GPA Calculator

  1. Add each course with its letter grade and credits (use 1 for a full-year class if your school doesn’t use credits).
  2. Choose the course level: Regular, Honors or AP/IB.
  3. Read your unweighted GPA (standard 4.0 scale) and weighted GPA (with Honors/AP bonus points) instantly.

GPA Formula

GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

Each letter grade is converted to grade points, multiplied by the course credits, and the total is divided by the total credits.

Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA uses the 4.0 scale for every class. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder courses — this calculator adds +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB (no bonus on an F), so the maximum is 5.0. Schools differ, so check your school’s policy.

Example: A in English (Regular), B+ in Algebra II (Honors), A− in Biology (AP) and B in History (Regular), 1 credit each → unweighted (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0) ÷ 4 = 3.50; weighted (4.0 + 3.8 + 4.7 + 3.0) ÷ 4 = 3.88.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my GPA?

Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.), multiply by the course credits, add them up and divide by total credits.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the 4.0 scale for every course. Weighted GPA adds extra points for Honors and AP/IB courses, so it can go above 4.0.

Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?

On most high school and college scales, A+ and A are both 4.0. Some schools use 4.3 for A+; check your school’s policy.

How many bonus points do Honors and AP classes get?

This calculator uses +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB, the most common approach. Your school may use different values.

What if my classes don’t have credits?

Enter 1 credit for every class so each one counts equally.
