How to Use the Weighted Grade Calculator

  1. Add a row for each grading category from your syllabus (tests, quizzes, homework, projects…).
  2. Enter the grade for each category as a percentage and its weight.
  3. The weighted grade and letter grade update instantly. If your weights don’t add up to 100%, the calculator scales the result to the categories you’ve entered — handy mid-semester.

Weighted Grade Formula

Weighted grade = Σ (grade × weight) ÷ Σ weight

Multiply each category grade by its weight, add those products together, then divide by the total weight.

Worked Example

CategoryGradeWeightGrade × weight
Tests86%40%34.4
Quizzes91%20%18.2
Homework95%25%23.75
Participation100%15%15
Total100%91.35%

The weighted grade is 91.35%, an A. A simple average of the four categories would be 93% — weighting matters because tests count for more.

Weighted vs. Unweighted Average

An unweighted (simple) average treats every grade the same. A weighted average lets important work, like exams, count more than small assignments. Most teachers set category weights in their gradebook, and this calculator mirrors that setup exactly. For a plain average, use the average grade calculator; to find what a student needs on the final, use the final grade calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the sum of the weights. For example, 86% × 40 + 91% × 20 + 95% × 25 + 100% × 15 = 9,135, divided by 100 = 91.35%.

What if my weights don’t add up to 100%?

The calculator divides by the total weight you entered, so you get your current grade based only on the categories graded so far.

Can I use points instead of percentages?

Convert each category to a percentage first (points earned ÷ points possible × 100), then enter it with the category weight.

How many categories can I add?

As many as you need. Tap “+ Add category” for each one.

Is my information saved?

Your categories are remembered only in your browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded.

What grading scale is used?

The standard A 90 / B 80 / C 70 / D 60 scale, or your own custom scale if you changed it in the Easy Grader.
