How Average Grade Is Calculated

For percentages, the calculator uses the simple mean: add all the grades and divide by how many there are.

Average = (Grade₁ + Grade₂ + … + Gradeₙ) ÷ n

Example: 85%, 92% and 78% → (85 + 92 + 78) ÷ 3 = 255 ÷ 3 = 85%, a B.

For points, it divides the total points earned by the total points possible, so bigger assignments count more:

Average = (Total points earned ÷ Total points possible) × 100

Example: 18/20 on a quiz and 70/100 on a test → 88 ÷ 120 = 73.3%. Averaging the two percentages instead (90% and 70%) would give 80%, which is why the points method is more accurate when assignments have different totals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my average grade?

Add up all your percentage grades and divide by the number of grades. If your assignments have different point totals, divide total points earned by total points possible instead.

Should I average percentages or points?

Average points when assignments are worth different amounts, because a 100-point test should count more than a 10-point quiz. Average percentages when every assignment is worth the same.

What letter grade is my average?

The calculator uses the standard scale (A 90+, B 80+, C 70+, D 60+, F below 60). If you set a custom scale in the Easy Grader, the same scale is used here.

Can I paste a list of grades?

Yes. Open “Paste a list of scores”, paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines, and click “Use these scores”.

Is my data saved?

Your rows are remembered only in your own browser so you can come back to them. Nothing is sent to a server.

Does this work for class averages?

Yes. Teachers can enter every student’s score on a test to find the class average, plus the highest and lowest score.
